The Vanaras of Ramayana: A Summer Crisis in the Holy Land of Chitrakoot
The Sacred Bonds of Chitrakoot
Chitrakoot is not merely a geographical location on the map of India; it is a living museum of the Ramayana. It is the “Hill of Many Wonders” where Lord Rama, Mata Sita, and Lakshmana spent eleven and a half years of their fourteen-year exile. Every stone here whispers the name of Rama, and every stream reflects the serenity of the Mandakini River.
Among the most vital inhabitants of this sacred landscape are the Vanaras (monkeys). In the spiritual heart of India, these creatures are not seen as mere animals; they are revered as the descendants of the Vanara Sena—the loyal army that stood by Lord Rama in his battle against injustice. To visit Chitrakoot is to encounter these playful, spirited guardians of the temples and forests. They reside along the Kamadgiri Parikrama Path, the heights of Hanuman Dhara, and the secluded woods of Sati Anusuya.
However, as the sun begins to bake the rocky terrain of central India, these sacred companions face a life-threatening ordeal.
The Summer Crisis: A Silent Struggle for Survival
As summer sets in, the temperature in Chitrakoot frequently crosses 45°C. The landscape, primarily composed of Vindhyan rocks, turns into a furnace. For the monkeys of Chitrakoot, this season is a battle for survival for three primary reasons:

-
1. Drying Water Sources:
The natural rock pools and small forest streams that provide water during the monsoon and winter dry up completely. Dehydration is the leading cause of heatstroke and death among the younger monkeys and the elderly ones.
-
2. Depletion of Natural Forage:
The scorching heat causes forest trees to shed leaves and stop fruiting. Without the natural bounty of the jungle, the monkeys face acute malnutrition.
-
3. Human-Animal Conflict:
Desperate for moisture and food, troops are forced to leave the safety of the forests and enter human settlements or busy marketplaces. This leads to accidents, injuries, and a breakdown of the peaceful coexistence that has existed for centuries.
Charanvandan’s “Vanara Seva” Initiative is a direct response to this seasonal emergency. We believe that serving the land of Rama is incomplete without serving those who have guarded it since the Treta Yuga.

The Cause
Chitrakoot, the sacred “Hill of Many Wonders,” is where Lord Rama, Mata Sita, and Lakshmana spent a significant part of their exile. The forests and temples here are home to thousands of monkeys, revered as the descendants of the Vanara Sena.
However, as temperatures soar above 45°C this summer, these sacred animals are facing a silent crisis. Natural water sources in the rocky terrain are drying up, and the scorching heat has depleted the forest’s natural fruit supply. Hungry and dehydrated, many monkeys are forced to venture into human settlements, leading to conflict and exhaustion.
Our Mission: Summer Jal & Aahar Seva
Charanvandan Foundation is launching an emergency relief drive to ensure that no “Vanara” in the holy land of Chitrakoot goes hungry or thirsty this summer. We aim to provide daily nourishment and hydration across key locations including Kamadgiri Parikrama Path, Hanuman Dhara, and Sati Anusuya Ashram.
Water, Fruits, and Compassion
Our mission this summer is simple yet vital: No Vanara in Chitrakoot should suffer from the pangs of hunger or the agony of thirst. We are launching a massive, coordinated feeding and hydration drive that focuses on three core pillars:
-
1. The Gift of Life: Jal Seva (Water Distribution)
In the blistering heat, water is the most precious commodity.
-
Water Troughs:
We are installing large, durable stone and earthen water troughs at strategic locations throughout the forest and along the pilgrim paths.
-
Daily Refilling:
A dedicated team of local volunteers and “Vanara Mitras” will ensure these troughs are cleaned and refilled with fresh, cool water twice daily.
-
Electrolytes:
In cases of extreme heatwaves, we add natural cooling agents and essential minerals to the water to help the animals recover from heat exhaustion.
-
-
2. Hydrating Nutrition: Fruit Seva
Monkeys cannot survive on dry grains alone during the summer. They need moisture-rich food. Our feeding drive prioritizes:
-
Watermelons & Muskmelons:
These are high in water content and natural sugars, providing instant energy and hydration.
-
Bananas:
A staple that provides potassium, helping the monkeys maintain their strength to navigate the steep terrain of Hanuman Dhara.
-
Papayas:
Rich in enzymes and water, aiding digestion which often slows down during extreme heat.
-
-
3. Sustenance: Vegetable Seva
To ensure a balanced diet that mimics their natural intake, we provide:
-
Cucumbers & Gourds:
These cooling vegetables are favorites of the troops and help lower their internal body temperature.
-
Boiled Potatoes & Seasonal Greens:
These provide the necessary carbohydrates and fiber to keep the monkeys healthy and disease-resistant during the harsh season.
-

The Spiritual Significance: Why This Seva Matters
In our Shastras, the act of Bhoot Yajna (honoring all living beings) is considered one of the five great sacrifices a human can perform.
“Living beings are nourished by food, and food is produced by rain; rain comes from sacrifice, and sacrifice is born of action.” — Bhagavad Gita
By participating in this campaign, you are performing a dual service:
-
Service to Hanuman Ji: Lord Hanuman is the presiding deity of strength and devotion. By feeding his kin, we seek his blessings for protection and resilience in our own lives.
-
Preserving the Ecosystem: The monkeys of Chitrakoot play a vital role in seed dispersal and maintaining the forest’s health. Saving them is an act of environmental preservation.
Transparency: Your Donation in Action
At Charanvandan, we understand that your contribution is an act of faith. We ensure that every rupee is utilized with the utmost integrity:
-
Local Sourcing: We buy fruits and vegetables directly from local farmers in and around Chitrakoot. This ensures the food is fresh and also supports the local rural economy.
-
Documented Impact: Every feeding drive is documented. Donors receive regular photo and video updates showing the actual distribution of food and water.
-
Zero Waste: We ensure that feeding areas are cleaned afterward so that the sacred pilgrimage sites remain pristine.
Be Their Hope This Summer
As you sit in the comfort of your home or office, imagine the sun beating down on the barren rocks of Kamadgiri.
Imagine a mother monkey searching for a single drop of water to feed her dehydrated infant.
You have the power to change that reality.
This summer, let us extend our compassion beyond our human circles. Let us reach out to the silent residents of Rama’s holy abode. Your contribution is not just a donation; it is a “Prasad” of life offered to the Vanara Sena.
