Pitru Paksha: A Sacred Fortnight of Remembrance

In Hindu tradition, Pitru Paksha is the most sacred time of the year to honour our forefathers. It is believed that during these 15 days, from 7th September to 21st September 2025, the souls of our ancestors come closer to accept offerings made by their descendants. The acts of food donation (Annadaan) performed at this time not only satisfy those who have renounced the world but also reach our ancestors as blessings across generations.

Serving the Living Embodiments of Our Ancestors

During Pitru Paksha, sadhus, saints, brahmins, and young batuks (student priests) are regarded as the carriers of divine grace and the representatives of our ancestors. To serve them with humility is considered a way of fulfilling our sacred duty (Shraddha), bringing peace to departed souls and blessings to the family.

In the holy city of Kashi, this practice finds its truest expression at Kailash Math, Varanasi, where Annadaan becomes both an act of devotion and an offering of gratitude.

Kailash Math’s Pitru Paksha Annadaan Seva

For the past four years, Kailash Math, situated in Bhelupur near the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Temple, has been carrying out Annadaan drives for devotees and saints. On this holy fortnight, the Math will dedicate its efforts entirely to feeding sadhus, saints, brahmins, and batuks who come to Varanasi during Pitru Paksha.

Every day of this sacred period, nourishing meals, fresh fruits, and milk will be served within the temple premises and extended to the ghats, where these holy men reside in deep prayers and rituals.

“Feeding Them Is Feeding Our Ancestors”

“The frail sadhu sitting in meditation, the elderly brahmin chanting mantras, or the young batuk learning the Vedas—serving them during Pitru Paksha is like serving our ancestors directly,” shares a sevak at Kailash Math. “Through this Annadaan, we offer gratitude to those who came before us and secure blessings for generations to come.”
