Varanasi, one of India’s oldest and holiest cities, holds a special place in the hearts of millions of devotees. This city, known as Kashi, is renowned for its sacred rituals and spiritual practices dedicated to Lord Shiva. Among these rituals, Bilvaarchana, and Bhashamabhishek Puja stand out as profound ceremonies that draw countless devotees, especially during the auspicious month of Shravan.

The Sacredness of  Bilvaarchana and Bhashamabhishek Puja :Bilvapatra

Bilvaarchana Puja :

Bilvaarchana Puja is an important ritual where Bilva (Bael) leaves are offered to Lord Shiva. The Bilva tree is considered highly sacred in Hinduism, and its three leaves are symbolic of Lord Shiva’s trident (Trishul). Offering these leaves to the Shiva Lingam is believed to purify the mind and body, remove sins, and bring prosperity and peace.

A few lines from Bilvashtakam show the importance of Bilvapatra.

Please remember this text: https://manimahesh.in/%E0%A4%B6%E0%A4%BF%E0%A4%B5-%E0%A4%AC%E0%A4%BF%E0%A4%B2%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B5%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%B7%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%9F%E0%A4%95%E0%A4%AE%E0%A5%8D-%E0%A4%B8%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%A4%E0%A5%8B%E0%A4%A4%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B0/

Which Means

The Bilva leaf is a collection of 3 leaves put together, it indicates the 3 eyes of Lord Shiva and the Trishul of Shiva and it is triangle-shaped and offering the leaf will erase the sins of your three births.

Moolatho Brahma roopaya, Madhya Vishnu roopine, agratha Shiva roopaya, Eka Bilvam Shivarpanam.

This means –  That Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Shiva reside in the Bilva leaf.

Even in Lakshmi Ashtothram, one mantra is Om Bilva_nilayayai Namah, which conveys that Goddess Lakshmi resides in the Bilva tree.

So, offering the Bilva leaf erases all our sins, makes you prosperous and pleases Lord Shiva too.

Bhashamabhishek Puja :

Bhashamabhishek, also known as the abhisheka with ash, is a unique and respected ritual dedicated to Lord Shiva. Bhasma (holy ash) is considered sacred and is believed to signify the brief nature of life and the ultimate truth of mortality. In this puja, the Shiva Lingam is coated with holy ash while reciting powerful mantras. It is also a reminder of the soul’s eternal nature and the importance of seeking spiritual relief. The Significance of Performing Bilvaarchana Bhashamabhishek Pujas on Shravan Monday :

The month of Shravan, also known as Sawan, is highly auspicious for worshipping Lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, during this month Lord Shiva consumed the poison (Halahala) that emerged from the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) to save the universe. This act of self-sacrifice made Lord Shiva the ultimate protector and saviour.

Mondays in the month of Shravan hold special significance as they are dedicated to Lord Shiva. Devotees keep fasts, offer prayers, and perform special rituals to seek his blessings. Performing Rudrabhishek, Bilvaarchana, and Bhashamabhishek Pujas on Shravan Mondays is believed to increase the benefits several times. The divine energy is said to be at its peak during this time, making it the most favourable period to connect with Lord Shiva and receive his grace.
